Sense and Sensibility: Making The Case for Western Music Notation in Music Education" In this age of "decolonizing the curriculum" should we now decouple our ideas of music education from traditional musical literacy skills, or can (and should) we instead distinguish Western notation from its social and historical contexts and still make a case for its continuing importance in our music classrooms?

Dear Members of the International Kodály Society:

Dr. James Cuskelly is inviting us to the above-mentioned special lecture on music literacy from his colleague, Professor Peter Tregear. I am personally very eager to hear Professor Tregear’s thoughts, having begun my teaching career among Indigenous peoples in my home state of Arizona. It was there that I learned how there are many different aspects of literacy not always connected to writing or notation, which eventually influenced my doctoral studies. I urge you to take the time to enjoy Dr. Tregear’s lecture. Why is this important to the IKS? Because we are increasingly finding members among Indigenous peoples on several continents whose exquisite musical treasures deserve to survive into their future generations. Professor Kodály clearly understood this!

“Sincerely yours,

Jerry L. Jaccard, President
